Erect, sparsely hairy annual with ascending branches. Linear and toothed leaves. White flowers with orange marks and hairless calyx. Fruit ellipsoid and upper mericarp (portion of the fruit which becomes detached with an enclosed seed) shield shape.

The genus Hebenstretia in the Scrophulariaceae was published in 1753 by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus.
