Antlion

Antlion M Stanway

Seen in Fernkloof, the beautiful adult form of the 'Antlion', Palpares speciosus. Seen mostly at dusk or after dark, their wingspan is large, up to 6cm, and they have a lazy, flapping flight. Their larva, a drab, squat creature, is a voracious predator which contructs a conical hole in the sand from which it catches its prey with a pair of sharp curved, sucking jaws. It spins a spherical cocoon in which to change into a short, stout pupa. It is astonishing that such a long, slender 4-winged adult eventually emerges from it.
