Description

Total length 12cm - weight about 14g. Nose fairly long - tapering to a pointed tip. Dark greyish-brown grizzled with fawn or yellow - underparts and feet lighter and the tail has a dark brown line on top. Nocturnal and like many shrews is active in spells interspersed with periods of rest. It burrows under rocks or uses rodent burrows - lining its nest with soft debris. Prefers a moist - densely vegetated habitat. Common in fynbos. Feeds on a wide range of insects - earthworms and spiders. (Illustration shows the young 'caravanning' behind the mother)
