Willowy shrub up to 1m. Leaves 4-ranked, oblong, hairy beneath, 2-3mm long but enlarging rapidly in fruit; flowers in spikes, tubular; produces fleshy, orange to red fruits.

Wind pollinated; clouds of pollen are distributed when plant is handled or shaken.
